Description and Equipment: Ah, nothing like a good cup of something hot to drink to warm me up before I brave the temperatures outside to go hunting for gems. I specifically teleported myself and my trusty mount to this world in such a way that I’d rematerialize in an environment as similar as possible to that of my home planet, because as steadfast as Zepher (my mount) may be, I wanted to startle/disorient him as little as possible. Thus we are inside of this active volcano. I hear the temperatures outside of here, in the place called Hawaii, can get as cold as 90 degrees Fahrenheit at this time of year. Brrrr! Be a good boy now, Zepher, and drink up some magma like Momma’s doing so you’ll have some extra warmth in you before we go brave the cold.

(Apparently this creature’s native language sounds like an annoying staccato of buzzing/zapping noises to human ears. I do hope it figures out some other means by which it can communicate with us. Perhaps a graduate student of either linguistics or exoanthropology could endeavor to teach it a modified version of morse code, with various long-short patterns corresponding to whole words as opposed to letters to form a small vocabulary to start with. Perhaps instead of merely having 2 sound durations (long or short), the modified code could use 3 or even 4 durations. It would make a great thesis project... assuming of course that the creature is not hostile and was not trying to say “prepare yourselves for slaughter!”)

Description and Equipment: Do you have any idea how hard it is to hail a cab as a 3-headed creature on this planet? They are so bigoted here. The taxi drivers just go right past you, even when they clearly have their fare light on and it’s not like they don’t see you either. In the end I had to pay through all three of my noses (I think that is how your saying goes? When one has to pay a very great deal of money?) to hire this novelty horse-and-carriage rig. Even the coachman didn’t seem at all pleased to be taking me on as a customer, kept sneaking appraising looks at me out of the corner of his eyes before he agreed to take me, as if I might be dangerous just because of the number of my heads. But I think he realized that no one else was about to shell out such a ridiculous fee for his services and I’d probably be the only fare he’d get all day so he’d better take it.

Description and Equipment: A dark creature. You don’t want to get on the wrong side of this creature or you will face the consequences. It has power to do a lot of harm and mischief. With an obsidian skull helmet it can face any attacks, its bat wand has the power to change anything (including you) into a bat and its shade snake pet and mount can give the most deadly bites. It’s crystal crescent robes mean it can see you to hunt you down at night and its mastered shadow summons its energy and power. Even the purple background makes it feel at home and gives it energy.

Journal of doctor D.B. Wiley 4/8/13 It just showed up all of the sudden, appeared over night about two miles off shore, first spotted this morning. A giant towering cake with no explanation. No one has worked up the courage to approach it yet, and it doesn't seem to have moved at all since it appeared; though who knows what it could possibly be for, what it could be doing?

Journal of doctor D.B. Wiley 4/13/13 The cake is still there. Some brave souls have decided to approach it today; I'm getting too old for that sort of recklessness personally. I hope it's less dangerous than it's general existence implies.

Journal of doctor D.B. Wiley 4/15/13 The crew came back today and there is much to say. They say it was seemingly nothing more than it appears to be. Some of the more foolhardy among them had decided to taste it near immediately after arriving and they still haven't fallen ill surprisingly. They say it had started to diffuse into the sea water by the time they got there, the water turning a murky white around the base for about fifty feet around it with dead fish floating around it, though there did seem to be a few heartier ones that were eating those that had died and the parts of the cake that are submerged with gulls feasting on the layers above water.

The strangest thing they shared was a note, written in our tongue on a normal sized piece of our paper. I have been given this note to inspect and I shall try to keep it in good condition.

THE NOTE WAS FOLDED NEATLY BETWEEN THE PAGES OF THE JOURNAL. IT READS: This is a gift mortals, take care to give offerings in the future or you shall receive nothing more of me.

Journal of doctor D.B. Wiley 4/16/20 I gave in and sampled some of the cake brought back yesterday after most everyone in the village had tried some; it was quite tasty. They have sent a couple more crews out to collect the cake while the frosted monolith still stands and a sect of the people have started trying to work out what sort of offering should be given to the strange being that would give such a gift. I can see the value in keeping in the good graces of such a powerful being though I don't have such an inclination myself.

The part I don't understand is why they would make such a grand gesture other than to show off. There is no way for such a number of people to eat such a large amount of cake before it spoils with no preparation for such an event. Though it certainly is true that we will eat very well for the time it is good.

Gormenghast

Description and Equipment: We have always taken great pride in being known as the most resplendent rainbow race throughout all the reaches of our home dimension. But a great affliction has beset us. Ever since we heard of the gems in your land we have been turning more and more green with envy. Just look at me now. I am ashamed to even show myself to you at all. But this goes far deeper than surface matters - matters of pride or renown. Our color has always been our very identity! The philosophical implications of what it means that our color can, and is, changing have led to unprecedented levels of social turmoil, instability, and upheaval. Our society is on the brink of tearing itself apart from the psychological distress caused to each and every member simultaneously by the inescapable confluence of epistemic, existential, and ontological crises that confront us as we face a horrifyingly literal alienation from our own selves, our world, and seemingly all that we thought that we knew. Please, we must have these gems. It seems the only solution. Nothing else can cure the envy that, if it continues, will surely destroy my entire world. One despairing individual painted this portrait of what he believed we would eventually become, were a cure not found. I cannot bear to look upon it myself, it is too demoralizing (traumatic even) to see such a grotesquely nightmarish image, but I brought it to show to you to try to convince you of the extremity of our situation. That we may ever come to possess such an obscene form would be nothing less than eternal darmnation. Description and Equipment: Greetings habiticans of 2020. I have traveled a long way through space and time. I come from the year 2120 where pigs fly and we are all allowed to go out whenever we like. I’m sorry I’m so late but I was delayed by bad traffic on the skyway. I’m just on time. So here I am. Also don’t you dare call me a robot - never in my life have I been so offended - I am the last of the metallic marvels.

Lost Creature

Description and Equipment: Hello? Hello? Can anyone hear me? Yes, it’s me that’s talking. I don’t have an orifice that moves when I speak, but yes, I am indeed the one speaking. It is such a relief to finally have someone acknowledge me! You know, I expected to attract a great deal of attention on this world, and regrettably cause a good deal of fright as well, but instead I have found passerby to look my way briefly, snigger as if in amusement, and keep on walking. What? You think these people have been mistaking me for graffiti? Well it is true that beings from my home planet are close to what you would consider 2-dimensional. Technically, of course, we are as 3-dimensional as you, it’s just that we’re a little less than 1 of your millimeters thick. So I can see how that could be confusing for people around here. Especially in THIS neighborhood. Why just look over there - someone dropped an ice cream cone and neglected to clean it up! And that is hardly the only instance of litter about. Why there is some dirty refuse just over there, but the streets themselves are so dirty that you have to look quite closely to even make it out. The neon sign of the shop behind me only partially lights up, and then only sporadically. The flyer on that wall over there advertises a concert happening January 2nd, making it over 4 months out of date, and still it has yet to be either taken down or replaced. All of these signs point to this being a neighborhood in a deep state of neglect indeed. Just the sort of downtrodden place where you would expect graffiti to crop up. Just my luck that the terminus of my vortex-portal wound up landing in a rotten neighborhood. Though on the bright side I am glad that my presence did not cause the fear and panic I worried about. Anyhow, I am obviously here - and by “here” I mean on this planet, not “here” in this alleyway - to hunt for the gems. And while I suppose they COULD be hidden underneath trash, this particular trash seems pretty ripe. By which I mean it looks (and smells) like it has been here quite a while. And given the way that those... whatever they are... have become fused to pavement through repeated exposure to rain, they cannot have been moved recently either, so no gems could have been hidden underneath them. Since the gems were hidden only recently, there would be no practical purpose to my debasing myself rummaging through the refuse strewn about here - and this time I DO mean “here” as in this particular alleyway. So I was hoping you could direct me towards the gems, or at the very least towards a cleaner portion of what I am sure must be a lovely world of yours when considered overall....?

I have cleverly crafted you from nanobots to blend in to this environment, mimicking the shape of one of this planet’s natural creatures, and using the colors of this planet’s soil, for I suspect you will have some digging to do. I am convinced the gems are buried. This is a magnetic-nickel-iron-core planet, with much nitrogen in the atmosphere. These things combined have the effect of rendering adamantium-based gem scanners, which rely on gems’ highly-specific atomic-lattice structure, unusable within the earth’s crust, comprised as it is of 90% silicate minerals (source). Silicates, being anions, have negative charge you see! It is the perfect place to hide them!

(AND IT BROUGHT OTHERS) I, the eldest sibling, and natural-born leader, have gathered myself and my twin brothers to work in tandem to search land, sea, and air. As I search the land, my twin brothers are hard at work in their own environments of sea and air, as you can see:

Unfortunately my little sister insisted on tagging along as well, and my mom told me I had bring her along or she wouldn’t let me borrow the spaceship to go the gem-planet at all. So I told her that we were dividing our search up by the four elements: earth, water, wind, and fire. I told her we drew straws for who got what and she got fire, so I dropped her off inside a volcano before my brothers and I set off to do the REAL searching.

(Afterword/Postscript/Epilogue: It was the sister who found all 3 gems. Since 3 gems cannot be split 4 ways, her eldest brother commanded her to take them to the local currency exchange and convert them to cash, but she didn’t want to, and, after running to their mother in tears saying her brother wouldn’t leave her alone and was threatening to twist her horn-tips if she didn’t do what he wanted, their mother ruled that all 3 gems belonged to the sister and her brothers could sulk all they wanted about it but she wasn’t changing her mind.)

Description and Equipment: Hi, I know you guys around here are having a pretty busy “tourist season” so to speak, ha ha, what with all the creatures that have come here looking for the gems and all, but I actually came by looking for my cousin Marvin, but actually everyone just calls him Marv. Oh, I forgot to introduce myself first, I can be so stupid sometimes. I’m Stanley. Anyhow, I know that Marv visited here just a little over a year ago. He looks very much like me, except he had rounder ears that were red around the rims and yellow inside. He’s also not a very snazzy dresser, so I am guessing he wasn’t wearing special accessories like my own purple earrings. Do you like them? I bought them just last week, I couldn’t resist, I know they’re going to be the next big trend in fashion on my world. He wouldn’t have been wearing epaulets or an ascot like mine either. I bought them to match my skin - do you think that that’s too matchy-matchy? But I digress. So... do you know if anyone’s seen Marv around here lately? I realize it’s been a while, but this is the last place he was known to have been. Despite the flourishing market for jewelry on my world my species doesn’t wear anything you would consider actual clothing, so Marv’s skin would look just like mine, so that should help. Perhaps I should just ask people if they’ve seen anyone else around here with skin like mine, since people might have seen Marv but not been properly introduced, so they wouldn’t know him by name. So HAVE you seen anyone else with skin like mine around? Oh, you haven’t, hmm.... Description and Equipment: Gosh, this place is turning out to be far more dangerous than I expected for a planet rated “Mostly Harmless”. That thing with the very sharp teeth and snapping jaws down there doesn’t seem harmless at all! And these frightening creatures seem to just jump out from the undergrowth with no warning. It’s as if you can’t even see them until they decide to attack! And it is not even just this one type of creature. So many of the creatures here have coloring that matches their surroundings so uncannily well that it’s almost as if some process of advantage caused widespread instances of camouflage amongst the creatures of this world. I’ll be glad to find those 3 gems if for no other reason than it’ll mean I’ll go home again and get away from all these terrifying Creatures!

Description and Equipment: At first you think your eyes are failing you. Then you fear it might be your mind. Then, you hope it will. What you think you see is a strangely writhing mass of pale, toxic-looking tentacles beneath a pair of rather virulent-looking orange eyes; still more tentacles dance above them in discordant, dark colors. A blue beak-like shape beneath the eyes seems to be mandibles of some sort, you think. The two halves of the creature are so disparate that if anything, it almost looks like two separate tentacle-entities -- tentaclies? -- the lower of which being caught up in the grip of the upper.

And then it speaks, and the tentacles move in unison -- each in a different direction. The words are harsh on your ears, and the voice is patently inhuman; only by straining can you make out most of the words. "My name Uth'Garrngarruk." (At least, that's kind of what it sounds like.) "I think I lost. I want go home. Weird and icky here. Wan' my moommmmyyyyyy!!!" In a moment, the harsh gutteral sounds have turned into a brain-quaking wail... And yet oddly you feel compelled to reach out to the odd-looking creature and offer it a hug. If anything, you figure it'll probably be good at hugs.

Description and Equipment: Ah, at last I have broken free of that dagnabbid interdimensional transport pod. Yes, yes, they ARE the only way to reach pre-existing planets in supra-universal spaces, since other methods of travel require going into cryo-suspension for so long that by the time you reach your destination any pre-existing planets will have long since ceased to exist, their home star (or stars) extinguished many petramillenia ago. Cryo-suspension travel requires a great deal of planning and knowledge of where areas of not-quite-so-dispersed interstellar gases may be starting to form into gas clouds which may form nebulae which may one day become stars which... well really it’s a shot in the dark in my opinion, despite what the astropredictive scientists may claim. I mean, if you want to surprise yourself when you go on an absurdly-leisurely-paced vacation, that’s great, but I don’t want surprises and I don’t have time for leisure. I want Earth and I’m working on a deadline here. So I know I’m lucky that pods exist at all, but really now, couldn’t the engineers have at least installed a HATCH? Probably not, actually, now that I think about it, since any pre-existing openings in the outer surface would, no matter how tightly sealed, create a break in the surface that would cause the whole thing to implode during immersion in the 17th dimension. Huh. And now that I think about it, a lot of the design is pretty good, like how they don’t take very long to grow around you, that’s definitely convenient, and they ARE pretty cushiony inside too. I guess It’s my own fault really for not thinking to bring along a monofilament chisel. If only I’d put one of those in my pocket alongside the pod for my trip home (it’s nice how the pods are so portable - just like funny-looking green coins until you activate them). Well live and learn. And hunt for gems!

The language of my realm consists of subsonic pulses which obviously cannot be transcribed using your alphabetic notation, so I cannot convey my name to you, but my race can be approximately translated as “those of the multi-mucronate polygonals”. I hope you do not mind that I brought with me many of the small domesticated beings known as “flight-sights”. They are somewhat like your insects, but consist only of a disembodied pair of red polygonal eyes. They are telepathic and respond to our vibration commands to go where we direct them. We, in turn, are capable of receiving their telepathic signals which allow us to see whatever the flight-sights see. Having them with me shall allow me to search for the 3 hidden gems much more efficiently. I have noticed that some of your primary sentient beings known as humans seem to react in a frightened manner to them, but I assure you they are quite harmless, though they do bring darkness with them wherever they go, since they see best in the dark. I understand your human sight is inconvenienced, rather than aided, by darkness, and that you are unaccustomed to experiencing darkness that comes and goes. Description and Equipment: Encyclopedia <word missing> (2010 edition): The bookwyrm is a <word missing> creature. He is most often found in libraries and bookshops where he worms his way through the books and devours the tastiest words. He has never been seen outside of books so it is still unknown how he travels between books. Some scholars assume he hooks into the minds of readers and by pushing them to read just one more book he <word missing> <word missing> <word missing>. Bookwyrms seem to prefer books printed on paper. It is speculated that the paper enhances the taste of the words. On the other hand there are - so far unproven - claims that there is a new subspecies of bookwyrms evolving that feeds on e-books.

If your books are infested with a bookwyrm there is not much you can do. So far all remedies have been proven ineffective. You can only hope to slow it down.

"Calm down people" says the creature, "I have just heard rumors that there are 5 gems hidden in this puny world of yours and I have come to take it! I'll make you all my servants until I can find it!". "Now move on it! I mean it!" The people scramble to find it. "What do these gems do anyway? They buy you costumes and pets, pitiful! I have enough money to buy all of that. I thought they were some kind of future technology! They're not an improved time traveler? Not even a light-speed device? Well we can travel 99% of the speed of light light but we haven't figured out how to get that extra 1%. Not not any of these things!!! Disgraceful. Come to me now, no one owns a flying car and drives it around!!! Who are you people. It turns out I have nothing to do over here so byyyeee!

Description and Equipment: Ring of deadly white amanita mushrooms: check. Found a stick of native wood and used it to etch a circle into the ground outside the circle of amanitas: check. Cast a curse upon the etching: check. Am wearing anti-curse warding gear: check. Spoke an incantation to invoke pink sparkles of levitation so that I could enter the ring of amanitas without trampling any of them. Dang, I forget to carry the stick with me. Lucky for me these levitation sparkles last for hours. Ok, I’ve got the stick again. Used stick of native wood to etch a circle into the ground INSIDE the circle of amanitas: check. NOW I can toss the stick over there so it won’t get in the way with the actually difficult bits. Am standing inside of inner circle: check. Took the 2 vials of “fire of finding” out of my pockets: check. Okay, this next bit where I am supposed to remove both stopped simultaneously will be a little tricky, but I can do it, just go slow, remember to breathe, but not TOO slow because as soon as the stoppers are removed the fire flares out, and also DON’T breathe in the smoke of the flames... Ok, steady as she goes and... Stoppers removed: CHECK!!! Hold both flames aloft and recite the ancient bonding poem... oh man, I hope I don’t mispronounce anything, or stutter, I mean what might happen if... but I’ve practiced, I can do this...

Description and Equipment: Legend has said, there was a story about a man who been sacrificied by the people living in his village to avoid Thark'Uman , the Ancient God disaster happened every 100 years. Only the blood of a young adult can satisfied the Ancient God to postpone his tremendous curse.

The man was taken by force by village people in his farm. He was working alone, far away from his family. A fight was rumbled until they made him passed out and dragged him to an altar. Ready for the holy sacrifice ceremony.

Anger .. and rage .. roaring inside the man's soul. He had family who loved him and a farm he took care so much, never crossed in his mind he would be the chosen one.

In his last breath, right after the holy dagger stabbed into his heart, he whispered

"O saka dewa marak dewa, chab't rah aing ing kula phantskeun jengg'n" (Oh you god of gods, take my life instead and i shall satisfy you)

Suddenly, the sky became pitch-dark, the wind blew so strong they never experienced before , and .. a black smoke and red blood came under him and shrouded his body. The dagger on his chest melted, slithering to his right arm and devoured it into became a bloody hook. Then his body ..gone..dissapeared with the smoke.

Many years later, the village transformed into a town, all the people living in peace. Only some people knew what happened 100 years ago and never told it to anyone ever since.

In a night, where everyone going to pack their business and went home, a mysterious creature appeared in the corner of one place that was known as The Sacrifice Altar. Wearing black red robe and a hook so sharp , he walked to the townies along with his underworldly companion, and killed everyone of them. Some them was shred apart, some of them was killed bitten.

No one was left behind. No one but his family.

He let them lived to tell a tale, The Ancient God demands no more one pure soul for the holy sacrifice, now He wants more blood even if takes a whole village, and through him, the Vampric Hunter, the Ancient one seizes his "offerings".

And the legend keeps on.

Description and Equipment: Hmm, the creatures of this planet seem to be afraid of me. They have quite an unfortunate tendency to run away screaming when I try to ask them about the gems I have come in search of. Luckily I never leave home without some string. You never know when you'll need some, and it comes in handy for sooo many things. Even more handy than a towel, if you ask ME! I have cleverly used some of it to tie some flowers around me. It's a perfect disguise. No one on this planet is afraid of flowers - I read so in my official Fodor's Travel Guide to Earth. And everyone know that you can believe everything you read so long as it is published by a major publishing company! (I actually bought several guides which I read in preparation for this trip - one can never be too prepared! Unfortunately none of them mentioned gems. They mostly spoke about affordable accommodations and how to ask for the bathroom. I do not sleep, so have no need of a protected location in which to perform the act, and any waste products that may come from impurities in the light that I eat are excreted automatically into another dimension. But I did learn some useful information about navigating public transit. I'm sure everything will go smoothly when get to the nearest "tube station". Apparently these tube devices can move faster than my maximum hovering speed, so that will surely come in handy.) Now when I ask about the gems, I am sure to get polite and helpful responses. When I ask the flowers themselves about the gems they do not run away, but that is because plants on this planet are not capable of running. They are still too scared to answer, but surely they have the ability to talk, so as long as I don't move too quickly this disguise will be absolutely perfect and I will encounter no further problems whatsoever, I am absolutely sure of it!

Description and Equipment: No one else on my planet seems interested in securing the gems of Earth, but I am. I believe that in order to not only find the gems but keep them Gzaltian possession the planet of Earth must be conquered and placed under Gzaltian rule. "Why not just bring the gems back to Gzalt?" the others ask. They have no spirit of conquest in them. Pacifists, every one. Not a smidgen of interest in helping me conquer Earth, so I decided to do it myself. Or rather, I decided to snatch a male egg from the hatchery (it's not as though I have to worry about being punished for breaking the laws of thievery, since I plan to spend the rest of my life ruling Earth, never returning to Gzalt to face "justice" merely for taking what I needed) immediately before boarding my FTL-drive ship. Now all I need to do is wait for my mate to hatch, so I can take his genetic material before eating him to provide sustenance for the several thousand daughters I will then give birth to. I will raise them to value conquest, instill in them the virtue of valor in combat, teach them military strategy and instruct them on human weaknesses. I will raise them to be warriors, to be weapons (both things which were outlawed on Gzalt millennia ago). 8 billion humans shall be no match for 3,000 Gzaltian warriors!

No, two beasts, you realize as they land in the light's center. One rides the other, and looks at you with a penetrating stare through the bright curves of its eyes. A voice seems to issue, not from its mouth, but from the thrumming crescent horns on its silver head. It echoes in your mind, bypassing your ears: I come from the moon seeking treasures of earth. Description and Equipment: Now that I have been released from that accursed "hospital" I can finally begin my gem-quest in earnest. THIS should be fun. The hospital-called-place was not fun. Indeed I became so lonely I had to develop an imaginary friend to keep me sane. He is a dark tentacled creature, and even though I have no need of him any longer I thought it would only be fair to let him enjoy the fun of gem-hunting with me as well, since he did so much for me. What? You … you say you can see a dark tentacled creature next to me??? Stop it! That's not funny, messing with my mind like that. Trying to convince me he's real and came from another dimension to answer my psychic cries for help. I am not psychic. Stop saying he's there! I never should have mentioned him. Now you're never going to let me live it down are you? Going to tease me forever - insinuating that I am some sort of baby by continually referring to my friend as if you believed in him. I am not a baby: it's a perfectly normal mental coping technique that can occur to any sound adult mind when it is faced with the pain and stress and captivity that I had to endure.

Miss Moon

Description and Equipment: It was a late evening in the small town of Loeft. A young man called Crispin was getting the last pack of grain he needed for tomorrow morning. His family runs the bakery in the small town and in order to be able to start backing early, he needed at least 9 fresh bags each week. His arms were heavy from the long day of work. The town was small, but the two farmers who supplied the bags of grain were stationed outside the village. As usual, it was quiet around this time. The sun has set and the last people can be found in the tavern for a beer. All day, the moon could be found high in the sky, but only after sunset the moon would get to shine. From behind he suddenly hears a soft female voice speaking to him: "Dear little medieval citizen, please tell me the way to the magnificent Lother Fort. It has been some time since my last visit to this establishment." The citizen backs away and drops the bag of grain. How did he not hear any footsteps coming? He must have been so tired of all the heavy lifting. While deep in thoughts if he ever heard this voice before, he turned around. While the moonlight was shining brightly between the trees, it was hard to clearly see every detail. Two things that he noticed right away were the beautiful white hair that waved in a magical way in the moonlight and the red eyes of her mount. She was clearly more wealthy class than he would ever be. Crispin: "Good evening, excuse me for my stupidity. My name is Crispin, the baker of the nearby town Loeft. I am afraid I have never heard of Lother Fort before. Please, how may I call you?" Miss Moon: "For you I am Miss Moon, young man. Do not forget. Please think harder if you have ever heard of Lother Fort before. It's been a long journey one could say." Crispin was clearly outranked and afraid he was in trouble. Meanwhile, he still did not get a clear view of Miss Moon, her feet were hidden under her robe. Now that I think of it.... The robe was so flush with the fur of her mount that he could not even tell how she was sitting. The robe was indistinguishable from the fur. Crispin: "Please, ex... exc.. excuse me Moon" Miss Moon: "MISS Moon young man" For a brief moment, her eyes shined as red as her mount. Crispin was confused and not sure if his eyes were tricking him. Crispin: "My apologies Miss Moon, I don't know the way to Lother Fort. Maybe someone else in my town has heard of it. I am sure there are still people in the tavern who know more of the surroundings and may be able to help you Miss Moon." Miss Moon: "Very well, the tavern it will be. I hope they do, or your night might end different then expected"

Description and Equipment: This creature is a mystery. He did not come for the Gems himself, but was dragged to this here planet by his adoptive parents & their twin daughters. He's only the equivalent of a 2 years old in his physical age, his knowledge being unknown. As his sisters & parents were quarreling among themselves, he ran away from the space shuttle. Soon afterwards, he disguised himself to hide in the woods. He was going to see how things were going & saw the 4 of them arrested for attacking a former U.S. president. In fear of them claiming that he threatened them into doing it, he bought camping gear & hunting gear, claiming his "plague doctor mask" is to protect him from the COVID 19 Virus, which he also bought a Ninja mask to put under it. He then returned to his campsite & set up camp. He built his only companion, Reboot, from scrap metal he found in that woods.

Description and Equipment: I am a rare Spotted-Fanged-Fantailed-Nudoarfalon. I am not especially fond of my species name, however, since the "nudoarfalon" part always reminds me that I am an orphan as well. I prefer to be called a "fanguulorious polka-beast"! The first part combines both my fangs and fan and the glory of both of them all into one word, and the 2nd part makes reference to my spots while also possibly implying that I am good on the dancefloor. I am still working on it though. In any case, that's just a name for WHAT I am, not WHO I am - my NAME is Leslie. And YES, I AM a boy! My mother, before she dd… dd… died (sniffles), ahem, well she was very old-fashioned and I was named after a great-great-great grandfather or somesuch. Not that I am trying to be misogynistic here, or trying to insist on a gender binary, I just wanted to clear things up. I am DEFINITELY not a misogynist because I realize that the females of my species tend to be smarter than us guys, but of course I am an exception. Obviously. I am, indeed, so clever that I have figured out a truly ingenious location for my hunting ground. I thought to myself, where would a planet that has a well-known history of hiding gems underground hide its most precious gems of all? In the planet's cloud layer of course! It's the place that no one would expect! Except, of course, for one so clever as I. But I don't think these earthlings reckoned on encountering a being of my mental powers. But what is this? Has another creature had this same idea as me? A strange looking being indeed has appeared before me. I do not recognize their species. Probably the safest course of action would be to retreat and continue my search in other portions of the cloud layer for the moment …

Description and Equipment: When you're lost in the woods and lost every bit of hope, you might come across a bank of a small river. And there, in the reeds, you might spot a young dark-haired lady with a fishing rod. But do not attempt to talk to her and definitely do not approach her, adventurer! She won't be in any help for you. She is something opposite - a sure death! As this girl is no other than infamous spirit, known to men as Swampy-Loo!
If she turns her head around and looks at a person, they immediately get hypnotized by two unholy green ambers of her eyes. Unable to resist, they will approach Swampy-Loo in dread. She will then stab her victim right in the chest and push them into the river! As a sacrifice! The river will accept the body of unlucky adventurer, and their soul will be trapped in the river for the eternity.
We do not know who the Swampy-Loo is, was she a living human in the past or she has always been such dark spirit. Only few people who met her survived to tell their stories, and we strongly encourage you, fellow traveler, to run away as soon as you spot a silhouette of a young girl sitting with a simple fishing rod on the bank of a reedy river in the night.

I know we've been searching for 5893208 years, 11 months and 298 days already, and I know we're most likely lost...all the sand dunes here look the same, it's dune after dune after dune, but we mustn't give up! Nothing can kill us, not rattlesnakes, not thirst, not cougars, not heat; you know that we are already very much not alive. In fact, we've died more than a hundred times. And that's okay! April Foolishness Challenge

Abrahamette Zoombledorf (asl)

Description and Equipment: One day Abrahamette Zoombledorf went for a stroll on the archery range. She ended that day with 2 new things: an arrow through her head and also a sudden, unshakable conviction that she was not a human being but rather a surprise gift basket. She immediately took the pile of bones that was in the corner of her bedroom (that’s ANOTHER story) and used it to weave herself an actual basket she could fit into, to increase her basket-ness, and bought a mask to wear to increase her surprising-ness. Since donning her basket and mask she has been on a quest to obtain gourmet food items to enhance her quality as a gift. To date she has collected pie, pizza pie, a carrot, some regular eggs (although unfortunately only the shells), and half of a candy egg. She has also acquired a friend on her travels: Piff, who is a marshmallow slime. Currently Piff is helping gather honey for Abrahamette to smear on herself. Unbeknownst to Piff, Abrahamette is currently considering how close a marshmallow slime is to a regular marshmallow, and whether or not her new friend might be edible, and if so how best to capture Piff and incorporate zim into the ever-more-eccentric amalgamation of mis-matched food items she has physically attached to herself in her baffling quest to become the best surprise gift basket she can be.

Description and Equipment: For me, winter is all about SNOW. I love the sparkle of it, the faint smell that it has, and the crunching of snow under my boots as I walk is my favorite sound in the whole world. I first tried creating a scene of myself in a Poofy Red Parka (which is exactly what I own in real life for when the temps get below zero) and a black balaclava (umbral hood) for those time when it is just too cold for a Floofy Stocking Cap. I was standing amongst snow-covered trees and had a squirrel pet next to me since I love to watch the squirrels in my backyard go after the suet that gets put out in winter. But it just didn’t seem wintery enough. So instead I bring you.... The Snow Fairy!

Description and Equipment: Well, when I saw this challenge, I immediately envisioned all of the snowy costumes I could make. After a few moments thought, however, I realized that IRL I live on a tropical island. My Christmases aren't snowy at all! With this in mind, I offer you a more likely version of a Christmas for me:

Benjamin, the Avid Reader, straightens up and pushes his glasses back up his nose. After sitting on the beach building sandcastles for a couple of hours, his skin is becoming sunburned. He straightens the Santa cap on his head and bends back over to continue work. After he finishes building an enormous sandcastle, he washes the sand off in the sea and sits down in the shade of a palm tree to rest and cool off.

Have a merry snowy Christmas! I'll keep the sun and sand.

Description and Equipment: For me, winter means chilly weather, bundling up in warm clothes, drinking warm drinks, and most importantly, Christmas decorations and enjoying the Christmas season all December! I love fall, but once Thanksgiving ends, the real fun of December begins! The decorations, the music, visits to Santa's Wonderland, driving around with the family looking at Christmas lights, shopping for presents...this season is a dream come true!

For my scene, I chose this background for two main reasons: 1.) the cold weather and warm clothes are well-represented, and 2.) the warm glow of the cabin in the background represents all the comfort and coziness that the indoors can bring when the weather gets really cold!

Note: I cheated a little in this one. Because greys are so subtle, the red eyes on the "shade" pets really become the focus, which I didn't want. The shade snail has two pixels of red, one on each antenna (are they still called antennae for snails?) and I colored over them with black.

Description and Equipment: Little is known about the everyday lives of the Mushroom Gnome people, since they are often hard to find in their native environment of the forest, where they use camouflage to blend in with the non-sentient fungal life. (Some scientists actually theorize a form of metamorphic sleep hibernation in which the red mushrooms that we perceive as simplistic organisms, lacking brain & nervous system, with roots in place of legs, are actually Mushroom Gnomes in their dormant state, but others call this notion ridiculous, claiming that the reason Gnomes are so hard to observe in the wild is simply because they possess soil-powered invisibility.) The one aspect of Mushroom Gnome culture that IS well documented (because it takes place in a human environment) is their seasonal celebration (both holiday & annual rite-of-passage) of what scientists translate as “Spring of Spring Day”. The Mushroom Gnome people are no strangers to the concepts of metallurgy, but molten metal gives off too much heat for the fungal tissues of their bodies to survive even moderate proximity, rendering them unable to forge metal objects of their own: all such objects used in their village technologies have to be scavenged. On February 2nd of each year, young Mushroom Gnomes on the verge of adulthood venture into the nearby “fortress of the giants” (otherwise known as the home of Dr. Candice Von Neumann & her wife Laurie) seeking to “engage with the creatures of metal and bring home trophies of village-improvement”. February 2nd happens to be Groundhog’s Day in the human world, and since Candice’s large backyard is home to a sizeable groundhog population her granddaughters always visit her on this day. To amuse them, Candice brings out her collection of miniaturized automata, winds them up and lets them roam the house. These are the “creatures of metal” that young Gnomes attempt to “engage”, trying to make the panel on a small robot’s side pop open & metal bits fall out. Most sought after are springs. If any Gnome is successful in bringing back a spring to the village it is declared that Spring Is Here & legend has it that warm weather will immediately follow (psychologists explain that springs are valuable for outdoor building, so acquiring a spring will motivate Gnomes to go outside simply because they are excited to build & thus regardless of the actual temperature they will say it is “warm enough to build”). If no springs are brought back to the village, it is taken as a sign that it will be a hard year (psychologists explain that a lack of springs will mean fewer labor-reducing machines, so Gnomes will have to do more labor manually, making the year seem difficult). Retrieving a cog portends a healthy rain cycle (psychologists can’t agree why). Old-timers see screws as a mixed blessing: useful to keep machines running, but also reason to take extra precaution against avian predators (psychologists don’t even want to hazard a guess on that one).

a scarf: The yarnling prefers not to predict anything, but just wants you to look fashionable.
socks: You can soon expect snow snowflake as deep as the socks are long. The amount doubles or triples, etc. depending on the number of socks!
a carpet bag: The yarnlings in your area will soon be doing a mass migration. This is a friendly alert for nature photographers.
wool underwear: There is VERY cold weather ahead: don’t freeze your buns off!
a robe: The yarnling has been very industrious; a season of efficiency is headed your way.
a backpack: Very rare. The yarnling is craving a peanut butter and jelly sandwich -- kindly feed it one, and it will be on its way!

In regions with dense yarnling populations, wearing pairs of mismatched yarnling mittens is quite popular. Additionally, trading potlucks where people bring a dish to share and trade mittens to create the most complementary mismatched pair aren’t uncommon.

Description and Equipment: Well I have no idea what pieces I used except what's visible, but here's my computer crashingly good costume! I used the Aurora hair color (Winter Wonderland), 2nd bangs and 17th hair base, and the background is Winter Fireworks (December 2016). For the costume, I used the Monster Scalp of Science (Warrior, Fall Festival 2014), Comical Arrow, Finned Oceanic Armor, Sorcerous Snowboard (Mage, Winter Wonderland 2015 - 2016), Cape of Thunder (August 2016), Plague Doctor Mask and the Take This Pauldrons. Finally, my beasts: Skeleton Snail mount, Zombie Cactus pet.

Sea Treasure

Description and Equipment: Buried deep amongst the sunken ship (July 2015) stands a treasured avatar. Having sunk during a costume party celebration the avatar is harmlessly armed with a confetti cannon (Healer, Winter Wonderland 2015-2016) . It is accompanied by a shield so overgrown with algae it’s impossible to discern that it’s a dragon tamer shield, useless against the camouflaged mantis shrimp. More’s the pity, since the mantis shrimp makes for a breathtakingly glorious yet dangerous pet, and when fully grown into a mount closely guards the ruins preventing escape. The avatar is adorned in a rather strange assortment of animal costumery including butterfly wings and antennae (April 2014) that mimic the shrimp’s own atop an orange cat hat. Hidden underneath the costume is the reason for the avatar being the sole survivor of the costume party. They were protected by their invisible royal magus robe.

Description and Equipment:“Oh, up closer this building is starting to give me the creeps... and I don’t know if it’s just my imagination but that tree seems downright ominous! Luckily I don’t need to stay here long, I’ll just grab this scrumptious-looking blue-frosted cupcake and head back towards to shore to see if my friends have flown over yet. Oh, and look, the frosting is adorned with 3 of those tiny little blueberries, glistening with syrup just like from those tins that come with the good brand of blueberry muffin-mix, how adorable is that! I almost want to wait to eat it so I can show my friends how cute it is, but then they would want me to share, and I am really quite hungry so... (nomming)”

But little did our protagonist know that the scary-seeming castle was in fact a far safer place than the snowfields she planned to return to. The monster living in the ominous-seemed tree had converted to veganism years ago, convinced by the resident-inventor who lived in the castle of its health benefits. The inventor’s creations ate only oil or lightning, and the monster’s previous reputation was strong enough that any other predators who might be interested in eating a winged blue-sprite stayed far away. The snowfields, on the other hand, were in fact a vast, deceptively-mild-looking cover beneath which was hidden the many-tunneled warren lair of... (continued due to char limits... which are actually kind of convenient here)

Description and Equipment:...the Unspeakable Speaker! She was the fiercest of fiends, the most nightmarish of nemeses, the most heinous of horrors. She could pounce at any moment, employing her potently powerful (plus plentiful) legs to penetrate the snow. This prodigious preternatural predator’s presence was not such a pale, paltry thing as “peril”, it was doom itself. For, as astounding as it may be, this archfiend anciently acquired an amazing, appalling, and alarming ability to afflict agonizing ailments against antagonists, acting to attenuate all animation, accomplishing absolute acquiescent apathy, all achieved via adroit administration of astoundingly acute amounts of atrociously awful alliteration alone (avowedly abhorrent alliteration applied in astronomically ample avalanches), absent any apparatus at all, and also apart any additional artistry or alternate attack! Abominable! When the prey was thus paralyzed by the she-demon, her offspring were free to drain the still-living victims of all the fluids of life, rendering the corpses so desiccated that they simply dissolved into powder, which would immediately be taken up by the icy winds to drift and mix with the snow, leaving no traces of the violence that occurred to possibly warn other of the danger. Once her children grew nice and fat, the unspeakable speaker ate them herself. She was an eternal being, solitary, a queen capable of producing drone offspring completely asexually.

The Unspeakable Speaker had sniffed out the winged blue-sprite earlier, but the scent had wafted down from high in the air, and by the time she pounced, the sprite was already a speck in the distance. But one of the Unspeakable Speaker’s offspring had clamored to the surface as well, and is reluctant to descend back down below without getting a meal. Acting pouty and recalcitrant, the mother decides it’s not worth the effort to force the child back under just yet, especially when it happens to be such a nice day out. So the two of them are roaming the snowfields. Is the winged blue-sprite currently flying towards certain doom? Are her friends? FIND OUT IN THE SEQUEL WHICH WON’T BE PUBLISHED FOR ANOTHER 10 YEARS!!!!
